Jan Neruda: Povídky malostranské

The publication is designed for students on the level of B1 and above. The poet, prose-writer and journalist Jan Neruda (1834–1891) is one of the most important Czech authors of the nineteenth century.  One of the streets by Prague Castle, near where he was born, is named after him. Neruda spent his whole life in Prague and his work is closely tied with the city. His stories present Prague’s lesser quarter’s inhabitants from all walks of life, with a mild irony and psychological accuracy. He allows us to rediscover the forgotten magic of the old world, and presents timeless portraits of human characters. The volume is accompanied with contemporary illustrations, which bring life to the plot and help readers understand the meaning of the stories.

The publication includes a brief portrait of Jan Neruda, six of his adapted stories and brief information and old Prague’s house signs. It also contains a set of exercises to improve grammar, vocabulary and communicative skills for each text, a Czech-English-German-Russian dictionary and an answer key to exercises. The set also includes an audio CD with a complete recording of the book.
